On February 19, 2026, in Ibirité, a newborn baby girl was found abandoned inside a sewer — dehydrated, hungry, and fighting to survive.

After rescuers rushed her to the hospital, doctors faced another urgent problem: there was no infant formula available.

With medical approval, an extraordinary act of compassion followed.

Helen Valerio, an officer with the Military Police of Minas Gerais, had recently become a mother and was still breastfeeding. When she heard about the situation, she immediately went to the hospital and fed the baby with her own milk, helping save the newborn’s life.

Her police department later recognized the act as an exceptional humanitarian gesture.

Authorities later arrested the baby’s parents, both 22, who now face charges related to child abuse and abandonment.

In the middle of tragedy, one woman’s compassion became a lifeline.
