A 37-year-old man in Austria is facing gross-negligent manslaughter charges for leaving his girlfriend, 33-year-old Kerstin G, alone on Austria’s highest peak, the Großglockner, in freezing winter conditions when she became too exhausted to continue their climb. Prosecutors say he left her exposed to the cold to go for help — and she later died of hypothermia.

The climber claims she urged him to go find help after struggling, and that he spent about 90 minutes with her before leaving. Prosecutors argue he delayed seeking rescue, didn’t use available safety gear to protect her, and didn’t call for emergency help in time, making his actions negligent.
