People have reacted with alarm after Ted Cruz emerged as a potential contender for a future Supreme Court nomination.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he is preparing for the possibility of a vacancy on the Court, stating: “That’s a contingency I think you always have to be prepared for around here. And if that were to happen, yes, we would be prepared to confirm.”

Sen. Chuck Grassley, the Judiciary Committee chair, told a reporter that he “will recommend to Trump that Mike Lee or Ted Cruz replace Samuel Alito if he retires.”

In response, Democrats have launched a petition arguing that Donald Trump should not be allowed to appoint another Justice, calling it a “complete disaster for our country.”
