A North Carolina mother of three who disappeared nearly 24 years ago while saying she was going Christmas shopping has been found alive and well — ending a decades-long mystery. Detectives located Michele Hundley Smith, now 62, in North Carolina after new information came in, but at her request her current whereabouts are being kept private.

She vanished in December 2001, leaving behind her family and sparking a multi-agency search that lasted over two decades.

Her loved ones have been notified; her daughter shared a mix of joy, heartbreak, and uncertainty about reconnecting, and many questions surround why she left and what happened in all those years.

A donor heart was meant to save two-year-old Domenico’s life.

Born with a severe congenital heart defect, the little boy from Italy had been waiting for a miracle. Just before Christmas, doctors found a compatible donor heart — the news his family had been praying for.

But during transport to Naples, the organ was allegedly improperly cooled. Reports suggest it may have come into direct contact with dry ice, potentially causing critical damage.

The transplant was performed on December 23.
The new heart never functioned as it should.

For weeks, Domenico remained on ECMO — a life-support machine that temporarily replaces heart and lung function — as doctors fought to stabilize him.

On February 21, he passed away.

Authorities have launched an investigation, and several medical professionals are reportedly under scrutiny to determine whether a preventable error occurred.

A life-saving gift.
