Lawmakers in Kentucky have passed a law requiring drunk drivers who kill a parent or guardian to pay child support to the victim’s surviving children. The measure — sometimes referred to as “Bentley’s Law” — is designed to ensure children who lose a parent due to impaired driving receive financial support from the person responsible. Courts will determine payment amounts based on the child’s needs and the offender’s financial circumstances, with obligations continuing until the child reaches adulthood.

Supporters say the law adds accountability and helps protect children from long-term financial hardship following a tragic loss.
