  • Japan has taken a bold step toward a cleaner energy future by deploying Kairyu, a massive 330-ton underwater turbine that generates electricity from ocean currents. Anchored to the seafloor, the turbine’s dual propellers harness the powerful Kuroshio Current — one of the world’s strongest — converting its steady flow into a limitless supply of renewable energy.

After completing 3.5 years of testing off the coast of southwestern Japan, the turbine proved it could deliver stable power and withstand harsh underwater conditions. With ocean currents estimated to meet up to 70% of Japan’s energy needs, this breakthrough positions Japan as a global leader in marine-based green energy and could revolutionize the world’s approach to sustainable electricity generation.
