Easy French Onion Soup

Ingredients:
4 large onions, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp salt & 1 tsp sugar (helps with caramelizing!)
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup dry white wine (optional but so good!)
4 cups beef broth
2 cups water
1 tsp thyme, 1 bay leaf
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
French bread, sliced
1 1/2 cups Gruyère cheese (or Swiss)
Instructions:
Caramelize the onions: Cook onions with butter, olive oil, salt & sugar for 25-30 mins until golden brown.
Add garlic & deglaze: Stir in garlic, cook for 1 min, then add wine to deglaze the pot.
Simmer: Add broth, water, thyme, and bay leaf. Simmer for 20-30 mins, adjust seasoning to taste.
Toast the bread: Broil sliced French bread until golden.
Assemble & Broil: Ladle soup into bowls, top with toasted bread & cheese, then broil until bubbly and golden!
