Qatar Shuts Down Airspace Amid Trump's Troubling Tweets on Iran

The U.S. Embassy in Qatar warned Americans to shelter in place Monday as the U.S. awaits a response from Iran after President Donald Trump ordered three nuclear energy facilities in that country to be bombed on Saturday. Qatar, the site of America’s largest military base in the Middle East, has closed its airspace in preparation for a potential attack from Iran.

President Trump is scheduled to meet with with his national security team at 1 p.m. ET, according to Axios, and it’s not yet clear what kind of response the U.S. is planning should Iran retaliate. But Trump sent out an all-caps screed at Truth Social on Sunday, warning, “ANY RETALIATION BY IRAN AGAINST THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL BE MET WITH FORCE FAR GREATER THAN WHAT WAS WITNESSED TONIGHT. THANK YOU!”

The U.S. hit three nuclear energy facilities in Iran on Saturday, including the Fordo facility, the Natanz enrichment plant, and the Isfahan nuclear site. B-2 bombers dropped 30,000 pound bunker buster bombs, the first time that kind of munition had been used in war, to penetrate 200-300 feet into the Earth.

Trump has previously said he wasn’t interested in regime change in Iran, something his stooges like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance echoed on the Sunday morning political shows. But Trump immediately undercut their talking points by 5 p.m. ET on Sunday, suggesting that regime change was still very much an option.

“It’s not politically correct to use the term, ‘Regime Change,’ but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change??? MIGA!!!” Trump wrote.

That sentiment has alienated some of Trump’s so-called isolationist fanbase, including people like Tucker Carlson and Steve Bannon, along with Trump’s army of fascists on social media. But former New Jersey governor Chris Christie noted on ABC’s This Week that guys like Carlson would probably just shut up and take it. Carlson hasn’t tweeted since before the bombing of Iran started, so far proving Christie right. And people like Charlie Kirk are bending over backwards to rationalize why regime change in Iran would be good after insisting for years that Trump was the president of peace.

Israel conducted the first strikes in this current war against Iran on June 12, which has led to a volley back and forth between the two countries over the past 11 days. But it wasn’t until the U.S. bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities that American interests in the region became an obvious target for Iranian retaliation. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar currently has about 10,000 U.S. troops and is the forward headquarters of U.S. Central Command, making it a natural target for retaliation.

Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev criticized Trump in a tweet Sunday while also claiming that “a number of countries are ready to directly supply Iran with their own nuclear warheads.” Trump responded to that claim on Truth Social with a bizarre rant about “the N word.” Trump has joked about “the N word before,” which in this case means “nuclear.”

“Did I hear Former President Medvedev, from Russia, casually throwing around the ‘N word’ (Nuclear!), and saying that he and other Countries would supply Nuclear Warheads to Iran?” Trump wrote.

“Did he really say that or, is it just a figment of my imagination? If he did say that, and, if confirmed, please let me know, IMMEDIATELY. The ‘N word should not be treated so casually. I guess that’s why Putin’s ‘THE BOSS,'” Trump continued.

An Iranian military spokesperson issued a video statement on Sunday warned that “heavy consequences are expected,” according to an English language translation of Farsi by Axios.

The spokesperson switched to English at the end of the video, saying, “Gambler, Trump: You can start this war, but we will be the ones who end it.”
