Alright, folks, let's elevate the humble burger! Forget the boring buns, we're going all-in on crispy, cheesy deliciousness with my Grilled Cheese Burger. This isn't just a burger between grilled cheese sandwiches; we're infusing the grilled cheese right into the burger itself!

Recipe: Grilled Cheese Burger

Serves: 2 Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 20-25 minutes

Ingredients:

  • For the Burger Patties:
    • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend preferred for flavor and juiciness)
    • 1/4 cup finely grated sharp cheddar cheese
    • 1/4 cup finely grated Monterey Jack cheese (or another melty cheese like Havarti)
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • Pinch of salt (taste and adjust after cooking)
  • For the "Grilled Cheese" Toppings:
    • 4 slices thick-cut bread (Sourdough or Texas toast works great)
    • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
    • 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
    • 4 slices Monterey Jack cheese (or other melty cheese)

Equipment:

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Grill or stovetop grill pan
  • Spatula
  • Small bowl for softened butter
  • Two plates

Instructions:

1. Prep the Patties:

  • In a large mixing bowl, gently combine the ground beef, grated cheddar, grated Monterey Jack, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and black pepper. Don't overmix! Overmixing makes for tough burgers.
  • Divide the mixture into two equal portions and form them into patties, about 3/4 inch thick. Pro Tip: Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from bulging during cooking.

2. Prep the "Grilled Cheese" Bread:

  • Generously butter one side of each slice of bread.

3. Cook the Burgers:

  • Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.
  • Place the burger patties on the hot grill. Cook for about 5-6 minutes per side for medium doneness (internal temperature of 145°F/63°C). Adjust cooking time according to your desired level of doneness. Pro Tip: Don't press down on the burgers while cooking! This squeezes out the juices and makes them dry.
  • During the last 2 minutes of cooking, lightly salt the burgers.

4. Assemble the "Grilled Cheese" Burger:

  • Remove the patties from the grill and let them rest for a couple of minutes.
  • While the patties are resting, place two slices of bread, butter-side down, in the pan. Top with 2 slices of Cheddar and 2 slices of Monterey Jack, then carefully add the cooked burger on top of the cheese. Top with the final slice of bread butter-side up.
  • Lower heat to medium-low. Cook each side for 3-4 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey, being careful not to burn.
  • Repeat with remaining patty and bread to assemble second burger.

5. Serve and Enjoy:

  • Remove the Grilled Cheese Burgers from the pan. Let them rest for a minute or two before slicing in half (optional) and serving.
